When people say I’m a nerd, I take it as a compliment. After all, being a nerd almost guarantees that you have nerd friends, and there’s nothing cooler than nerd friends. Having been through a fair number of social groups, I can say that without a doubt my current group of friends (the awesomest nerds ever) trumps the populars, the silly girls, and the tomboys.
‘Nerd’ doesn’t mean goody-two-shoes, coke-bottle glasses (er…in most cases at least), and an obsession with test tubes. Nerd means, in a way, that it’s cool to be smart. And it’s cool to be yourself, whoever that may be. (It also means that we understand the humor in pick-up lines involving trigonometry. How much cooler can you get? Haha.)
Also, contrary to popular belief, nerds are not socially challenged (er…again, in most cases). Nerd friend circles are probably one of the largest coed social groups in high school. Nerd friends can help each other study for/or empathize over a score on a math test. Instead of getting in trouble at parties, awesome nerds play Apples to Apples and watch Up. And if your cousin were to show up to school wearing, say, a shirt that said “There are only 10 types of people in the world: those who understand Binary and those who don’t” it would be thought of as pretty funny.
Considering all that, my friends are about the coolest people I know.
